The english word for this costume is actually “garden gnome”. Beautiful light on Christina.

There is a beautiful lake just in the middle of the city. There were hundreds of birds…  I felt like in a Hitchcock-Movie…

The camera has a 50mm 2,8 lens. It does not have a metering system or a viewfinder. Takes a while to get used to it, because everything is mirrored.

The results are kind of weird. Not very sharp, not very true to reality, but a very very special character. For me, as the camera was built in the DDR, it is Berlin through a DDR lens:

A little portrait outside.

I don’t feel like I have the knowledge and the experience to give an overview about the musical landscape that has been evolving in 2011. I have listned to a lot of songs, have lived through a lot of albums and found a lot new music that I like very much. I intended to write a post about the “best albums of the year” and give a hammer explanation why I thought that these albums were the best. Then I realized that I am not listening to enough music to do that. Still, I wonder how pop music will eventually develop when almost every sog has either “tonight”, “baby” or “dancefloor” in its lyrics!? My personal favourite albums of the year are offside the poptrends of 2011.  This is only a personal list. If you don’t like the music, don’t bother. But maybe my personal recapitulation also gives some readers something new, presents an artist they haven’t heard of yet. If that’s so, well, then I smile.

#1: Bon Iver – Bon Iver

I remember listening to Bon Iver’s debut “For Emma, Forever Ago” every single day, when I had it in my hands. It was simpler, easier and more pure than a lot of records that I was listening to at the time. Naturally, I couldn’t wait for the new album. There are some beautiful guitars, some piano bars, some noise, a small crescendo and you know that this collection of songs is springtime. Justin Vernon left the small hut in the woods and gazes at the vast landscape. “Bon Iver” is warmer and more hopeful than its predecessor. Thank god it is.

#2: The Whole Love – Wilco

Someone really had to treat me to listen to this band. I didn’t know about it, I didn’t care about it. But when had a little spare time I gave “A Ghost Is Born” (published 2005) a try. Yes, this was a band I could listen to. Songs, such as “Hell is Chrome”, gave me chills, not just because of the lyrics. The new album is not as good. I didn’t like half of the songs. Still, I put it into this list. And the single reason is the first song. I love the drumtrack, I love the dynamics, I love it.

#3:  Apocalypse -Bill Callahan

This album is probably the one that one could expect the less. Half country, half folk music, still not able to being put into any reference, Bill Callahan has made a little record and I cannot call it anything else but little. It seems like he was somewhere in the middle of nowhere and played a nice old guitar. Somehow the trees around him seemed more important, the mountains more epic, the animals listening to his music were more human than his co-musicians.

#4: Early In the Morning- Vincent James McMorrow

Again, we break out of civilization, ran into the woods and live in the wild. This is beautiful, this is raw. Reading Thoreau and watching the stars. Thank you, Vincent for letting us take part in this. There are artist that can combine poetry and music. Yes, there are. They are not obvious, they are not in the hit list, maybe they are just out there, in the wild…

#5: The Rip Tide – Beirut

Beirut for me is like a love-hate-relationship. Sometimes I just can’t take it. Sometimes I just can’t get enough. When I heard the first chords of the new album I knew that this very first song could be a favourite of the year… and baammm! Horns, trumpets, drums… and I am in it! So many unusual ideas, so traditional and at the same time new…

So, as a last post of this year, I reviewed all my photographs of 2011 and tried to pick some street shots, that I thought make some interesting images and have captured a certain moment and selected also some of the portraits that I like very much. There are much more, especially in the portrait section. I just wanted to keep it down to 10 photos. It doesnt mean I consider them as my best photos, or good photos at all, but they mean something to me and I think they do so for others too. Ah, and the order is not a ranking.
